electrics for bathroom extractor fan

We don't currently have an extractor fan in our bathroom (no window either!) and would like to install an extractor fan. What is required in order to fit the extractor over the bath? Are there special regulations regarding electrical fittings over a bath?

Any electgrical fitting in a bathroom must be fit for purpose, with an electric extracttor unit, they can be fitted over a bath as long as it is a zone unt suitable for the area, it can be a flush mount unit, or can be incorporated into a zoned spot light. It can be operated via a pull cord combined or independently of the room lights. It can also be operated via a wall mounted switch outside the room. The fan must have its own fused isolator switch located outside the room too.
Most modern extraction units for bathrooms, can run direct off the existing lighting ring main, but always follow manufacturers instructions and have it installed by a qualified electrician.

There are regulations for electrics in bathrooms which are called zones.

Ventilation is extremely important in a bathroom as it can damage cellings and etc. Always check that your electrical is insured and qualified.

Our electricaians go on regular courses re required with a vast amount of knowledge.

Yes, every electrical work especially in the bathroom must be done by a qualified electrician. It is illegal to carry out major electrical work if you are not qualified.

Hi there, yes there are special regulations,Any new kitchen, toilet with no openable window, bath/shower room or utility room should be provided with a mechanical extract fan to reduce condensation and remove smells. The necessary performance of these extract fans is normally measured in litres per second (l/s) as follows:

Kitchen - 30l/s if placed over the hob and 60l/s if place elsewhere
Bath/shower - 15l/s with an additional 15 minute overrun (after the light is switched out) if there is no openable window

Yes. This can varying depending on height of the ceiling but as a rule I would be looking at installing a low voltage fan with a fan isolator situated above the bathroom door

The extract fan can be positioned in the loft providing thats above the bathroom with the fan vented to the outside, and a grill above the bath. it would be connected to the lighting circuit

power for the fan normally taken off the light
isolation for the fan
if venting through the wall core drill
outside vent
I normally offset the fan so it covers the bath but not directly over it seen too many clogged fans trying to do too much
