We have artex ceilings in our lounge, dinning room, hallway and 2 bedrooms. We are considering plastering over it to a smooth finish. How much does this cost (per sq m?). We're in Bournemouth. Not ready to hire yet - hence no job.
To do a artex ceiling it's a faster and a better finish if you reboard it with plaster boards and then skim. Typically this kind of job doesn't get priced by a square metre as it depends on how high the ceiling is.
Your best option is to remove the old ceilings. You can then install new plasterboard to skim. Depending on the condition of the current ceilings you can sometimes scrape the artex to take off the highest points then paint over a product called thistle bondit. When this dries (24hrs), you can skim over. New ceilings will be more expensive but you end up with a much better outcome.
I personally would charge on day rate as it would work out cheaper then pricing per square metre as most plasterers charge 10 per metre square or 12 pound per meter including materials
I prefer not to plaster over artex as putting wet plaster on artex revitalises it and will make it more likely to let go of ceiling. Much better method is to overboard and skim.
Depending on the depth of the artex you must put blue grit on it after its de-nibbin being carefully as artex before 1980 may contain asbestos, then if it's deep i would fill it out with hardwalling then P.v.a and skim
not that easy to price per per sq m because old artex not easy now hsc are saying asspesto in the artex can not scape no more .how old your house ?because after 2003 your fine. over board better option skim :) spelling not clever sorry
£12/£15 m2 for artex skimming depending on pattern of artex and if two or three coats needed
