How to extend a loft hatch without cutting through joists?

Im looking for someone to extend a hatch in a cutloft to accommodate a premade 60cm x 1meter hatch & ladder
The existing size hatch is 60cm(w) x 41cm (L) and I need to extend on the length (L) side to 1m

So the width is fine already 60cm- but to get 1m length would potentially need cutting through 2 joists as the distance betwween Joist 1 (J1) and Joist 2 (J2) is 41cm and the distance between J1 & J3 is 87.5cm

Is it ok to cut through the joists?
I presume this is a common problem?
If not how would the hatch be extended?

thanks in advance

Extending a loft hatch that involves cutting joists requires caution. Here’s a simplified guide:

Can You Cut Through Joists?

• Not Recommended: Cutting joists can weaken your floor’s support.
• Consult a Professional: Always talk to a structural engineer or qualified builder before making changes.

Common Solutions

1. Sistering Joists:
• Add New Joists: Attach new joists alongside existing ones instead of cutting through them. This helps maintain support.
2. Create a Header:
• Install a Header: If you must cut, consider installing a header beam to help support the load above.
3. Offset Hatch:
• Design a Hatch Parallel to Joists: Instead of extending directly back to 1 meter, create a hatch that runs along the joists to avoid cutting.
4. Relocate the Hatch:
• Move the Hatch: If possible, find a new location for the hatch that avoids interfering with joists.

Conclusion

Always consult a professional before making any cuts to ensure safety and structural integrity.

To extend your loft hatch to 1 meter without cutting through joists, consider these options:

1. Avoid Cutting Joists: Extend the hatch towards J3 (87.5 cm away) instead of cutting J1 or J2.

2. Install a Header Beam: If you must cut into a joist, add a horizontal header beam to support the load above the hatch.

3. Consult a Professional: If cutting is unavoidable, consult a structural engineer to ensure proper reinforcement and safety.

4. Alternative Designs: Consider a foldable or telescoping ladder that fits the existing hatch size to avoid extension altogether.

By using these methods, you can safely extend your loft hatch without compromising structural integrity.
