Can you paint over artex?

Is it possible to paint an artex ceiling. Our ceiling is starting to looking discolored and I am wondering whether we will need to overboard or remove the artex or whether we could just paint the artex the artex. Thank you.

You can paint over artex. It would require 2-3 coats. In my personal opinion I would overboard the ceiling or if you wanted new down lights put in a suspended ceiling under original. U can then either tape & joint it or plaster each giving a much better finish

Under no circumstances should you remove the art exhibit yourself, it's got an asbestos continent.

If you want to not spend out too much just paint it. If you would like to modernise then you can overboard and skim it. If your just going to paint it then use a brush as it gets better coverage. A roller might not get in the pattern as well and will more likely make a mess from splashing.

Hi, it is fine to paint artex. I would recommend a matt emulsion but dilute the the first coat with water about 10% water to 90% paint then the following coats neat paint.

Lightly rub your hand over the artex and if you get a powdery coating on your hand it will mean it hasn't been painted. Another indication of whether it has been painted is visible brush or roller marks in it. To avoid paint flaking, I would recommend thinning out the fist coat with water, say 15% to 20%.

But Asbestos hasnt been used since about the end of the 80's (i think)..so I really think it will be ok

As regards painting it...it wont flake or peel providing you thin the first coat out a little..say about 15-20%

Yes. Vynil matt or silk emulsion will look good. If the artex is pre 1980,s do not scrape dry as it contained asbestos until they were told to change the formula.if wanting a flat ceiling again its better to over caulk it rather than scrape. The more recent artex can be removed with a steam stripper.hope that helps.

Yes of course you can paint over artex. I would advise only to do this if the artex is in okay condition and not falling away or damp - in which case you would need to get this fixed. Important to note when painting artex is that if it is not a smooth surface then you have to paint by hand with a brush and not a roller as you will miss points. Also, if it is in a bathroom or kitchen that you get specific paint for these rooms which are designed to deal with water and condensation.

Yes you can paint over Artex. the best way to paint it is. If Artex has never been painted before use a stiff sweeping and just brush the ceiling to get rid of the sharp edges first as they will only get in your paint when you start painting. Then using a thick pile roller paint as normal.

Yes you can just paint an Artex ceiling.
If its old rather than new it may draw the moisture out of paint quick so add a little water to thin out. If the ceiling is cracked or artex is flaking you Can have it overboarded or unibonding then skimming, I wouldn't advise scraping back as some artex contains small quantities of asbestos.
