Rogue plumbing emergency traders

Is it fair to say that there are lots of rogue traders that operate under the guise of an "emergency plumber"? I ask because I was a victim of a rogue plumber myself.

It's not fair to say that at all. Most of the plumbers I know who provide emergency plumbing or operate "out of hours" are genuine and very decent. Providing more information about the situation would be beneficial.

My definition of a rouge trader is a tradesman with no knowledge of his trade Whatsoever, Emergency or a non Emergency, Most tradesman is 90-95% ebetable of trade. Plumber/Electrician who dose not have an up-to-date NECI OR GAS SAFE does not mean he or she is not worthy of his trade, As a builder of 35 years experience I have come across guys who has these paper work and there's still no guarantee.
I think it's down to the amount of his or her experience.
There are 45, 50 year old tradesman that no longer on the tools but has the wealth of experience to do the job. Its a consumers lottery to find that 100% tradesman, and that's at the ones top of their game.
The other end of the scale is the real cowboys with limited or little experience. A 4 year old trained man with qualifications & certificate can also guarantee your rouge trader.

Yes you are right. We come across it all the while in all aspects of trades and is not fare on the genuine tradesman that pays his liability insurance which is also built in with the cost when quoting for jobs. However we sometimes lose jobs because consumers buy on price ad then complain when they cant get the rogue tradesman back. Buy cheap, pay twice.

There are many rogue traders across all the disciplines, I work closely with a select group of tradesmen and women who have proved there worth and are qualified in their repective trades. i only use those whose work i have seen and have been recommended by consumers and business contacts.
If you are in doubt always ask to see a Blue CSCS card, these are given to qualified trades people only. Also ask for proof of public liability. Do a little research into the person or company you are thinking of having work done by.

It's hard to answer as I don't follow rogue plumbers but what I can say to help answers your questions is Prevention is better then cure! I'm a emergency plumber and have been for several years. I'm on a national plumbing list and also I'm a WRAS approved plumber there for I know the correct way to run pipes and meet building and local authorities regulations.

Try and check your plumber or company you are using has these.

Yes there are as it is in any profession. Certificate is not required for anyone to operate as a plumber by law. So that's what makes it difficult to know qualified plumbers from unqualified ones. Always ask to see ID.

I personally wouldn't say there are lots of rogue traders, however as in most industries you will find the odd trader who will not do their job as it should be done and therefore give others a bad reputation because of their actions but i haven't come across any, so would say that if there is, there'll be a minimal amount.

I think there are a few, I would always go for a local plumber who has qualifications that can be checked. The trouble with the big regional companies is that they do not vet there contractors well.
