painting old artex

I recently moved to a house that has every ceiling artexed. The artex has never been painted and is still dusty if you run your finger across it. I would like to have the ceilings skimmed and a plasterer advised that they should be painted first. I did one coat of watered down emulsion. The second coat has cracked and come down. Why is this ? Should I be over-boarding instead ? Where have I gone wrong ? many thanks Justin

try using a watered down pva to seal artex, this will also help plaster to stick, takes a bit of work though. sometimes its easier to overboard.

It would have been better to paint it with pva, but you need to scrape off all the bit that come down first/that are not secured to the ceiling. If you dont do this then you new plaster will crack in no time and come down eventually. Proper course of action would be to scrape of the artex completely.

Hello Justin, have just read your question and would like to say that painting the ceiling with a white wash is designed to kill the suction from the artex as it appears to be very dry hence why the second coat cracked. Another option is to use PVA mixed with water and roller on. Would like to know if the second coat of paint was watered-down, and at what ratio used for the first coat. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any further questions. Hope to talk soon. Barry

Hi. I will suggest remove the paint that you have applied and skim the ceiling few coats. Then paint.

it shouldnt have happened with the paint unless the preparation wasnt goood enough but the reason why the plasterer probably told you to paint was to hold back the suction but no you didnt have to do it when you could have gyp-bond it instead

Well not sure why he would suggest painting it first as that makes no sense.

Your options are;

1) Scrape down ceiling and remove excess flakey paint and then PVA and Skim
2) Remove ceiling and reboard and skim
3) Overboard and skim
