How and when to check that a builder has liability insurance?

Should I check that a builder has liability insurance before hiring them - even for a small job? How do I check the insurance policy? Call the insurance company? Thank you!

If the company is insured then a copy of the certificate could be made available. In most cases small jobs are not as bad for insurance.

The simple answer is that, beyond asking at the point of contact, there is no definitive way to know whether a business holds insurance until you raise a claim against them. But the importance of their cover to you as a contractor cannot be underestimated. As such, it is advisable to contractually stipulate that a supplier holds the business insurance you feel to be in your best interest.

All people that work in your home should have insurance to a least 1million , you never know when an accident may happen . The trades person should tell you that they are insured and be able to send you a link showing the renewal date and company insured with.

Not many customers will ask if you have any, they have the right to know for reassurance. This should be made clear before a quote has been accepted

Simple, ask your builder for a copy of his public liability certificate this will have the insurance or brokers details on . Give them a call quoting the policy number on the certificate and ask for comformation of validity.
When to ask we provide details before starting but you can ask at any time any reputable tradesman will be happy to oblige you.

It all depends on the job. If they are building a BBQ in the garden there is not much that can go wrong.
If they are removing a supporting wall then I would definitely request to see there liability insurance or company/number.

If you have any concerns you should ask the builder directly to send you their insurance policy to check they are covered not always required but if you do so that should not be an issue.
