Replacing fascia on garage
We want to replace the wooden fascia for UPVC on our garage. I am concerned, as the felt from the flat roof overhangs and we would need to lift the felt to replace the fascia. The roof is possibly 50 years old. If we lift the felt will it crack? Will we then need to replace the whole roof? Many Thanks

There is the possibility that the felt may crack but that would not mean replacing the whole flat roof, worst case would be that you would need to remove and replace the overhanging felt, but 9/10 we are able to replace the fascia without damaging the existing felt, I hope this helped with your problem.

You will not need to lift the felt uPVC facia can be placed straight onto of timber facia.

Unfortunately the felt will crack that is correct as it is so old your felt would usually last 8 to 12 years depending on its exposure to elements as yours is 50 years old I would recommend getting a new roof.

Yeah if it’s 50 years old it has had its time and this could be replaced. I would highly recommend to change it if it’s been on for this amount of time.

Yes you will have to lift the felt edges as they are nailed to the fascia I would recommend replacing the drip edges but not the whole roof

If you are careful you can take the facia away and replace with new by sliding up new facia under the felt

You would not need to replace the whole roof if replacing no when the UPVC fascia board is supplied and fitted if the felt cracks while in the prosses then I would suggest having the EPS system fitted which slots in the felt and allows water to run into the gutter

No it should be fine as long as the drip edges have been done correctly you should be able to replace the fascia boards with out Disturbing the the top mineral coated layer

The chances are you would need to do some kind of repair to the roof once lifting the edging of the felt.
if it came down to having to replace the roof if would be more more cost efficient to yourself and last a lot longer to replace it with Poly coated box profile protected metal sheets.

Hi there you would not have to replace the whole roof just the felt drips that come down on the existing fascia boards Install new upvc then felt new drips

The answer to this question is no the whole roof will not be needing redone, I would attempt to put the facia on without cracking or breaking anything but if it does it will need a touch up theres so many ways around this kind of thing without needing to re do the whole roof!

I’m pretty certain the felt isn’t 50 years old
( torch on felt was around 50 years ago) .
You are correct about the felt being nailed into the the Timber facsia and will possibly tear when lifted . Good news, the felt on the edge is a piece caked edging detail ( felt folded over to hide the nail heads . This can be replaced with out the whole roof felt being replaced

No you won’t need to replace the full new felt and you won’t need to lift the felt just take the old bored off and fit with new bored back in the same place
