Wood-chip ceiling

I’ve got a wood-chip ceiling. A plasterer has come and looked at it said he will bond it first with bonding thistle. Then 2 coats plaster over the top is this possible?

Hi there it sounds like the ceiling is wood chip wallpaper in this case you will have to remove the paper first before any plaster work has been done

I would suggest to take old ceiling off and after it apply hardwall where needed (bigger holes) and after it dry apply 2 coats of plaster skin.

Personally paper should be removed then pva and skim or overboard the ceiling and skim as paper absorbs water then it will come of I’ve bin in the trade for over 30 yrs and never plastered a ceiling that has paper on it at all causes more problems than it’s worth so better doing it properly from the start might cost you a little bit more but at least it’s done the correct way

Well sealed and bonded it could be done, I would have to see the ceiling but I personaly would prefer to take it down and plasterboard it instead, or plasterbord over the wood chip, screwing into the joists.

No bonding over wood is not possible without EML and that in my eyes is too heavy and dangerous I would advise the customer to pull the wood chip down re plasterboard the ceiling and then 2 coat skim

Unfortunately you can’t plaster over wood chip paper. Once you pva and apply plaster onto the ceiling, the wet plaster will absorb into the paper and fall off.
My recommendation would be to either
1- strip the paper off with a steamer (takes for ever) then once all the paper is off , you can prep and plaster as usual
or
2- fit a new gyproc ceiling over the top of the original wood chip ceiling then plaster.

Hope this helps

It’s a chance to take because no plasterer can guarantee if it will stay on ceiling in a months plus time… it’s a absolute nightmare to get off … I advise my customers to fix 9.5mm plasterboard over the ceiling fixing them through to the joists then skim… atleast you can get piece of mind that the plaster will be fine then

Wood-chip ceilings are old type off ceiling that is better to be taken off and replaced with plasterboard and then skimmed. If they are repair with bonding and then skimmed this will not be safe as it could make the ceiling collapse in future.

Hi, No. Unfortunately you cannot plaster over wood chip wallpaper regardless of what bonding agent is used. The surface would have to be stripped prior to Plastering. In some cases if your ceiling is plasterboard it can be easier to re plasterboard over the top providing there isn't any water damage to existing boards. Hope this helps

The wallpaper had to be removed first or it will fall by the weight of the plaster. Remove the wood chip and any lining paper, then pva and skim
