Slate in my garden?

Hi, I found some really, thick, large pieces of slate in my garden! Any ideas what these where for?

If they are as large as paving slabs theres a few reason for there use.

Good chance it could be when your home was being built, same as new builds nowadays, a lot of leftover materials are thrown in the garden area then covered with soil when the gardens are being turfed.

depending on where it is in the garden it could either be for drainage purposes or for helping with the growth of plants as there are certain elements in slate that are good for plants
