replacing fuseboard

I have just been told by an electrician that it will cost in the region of 800.00 to replace my old fuse board with a modern one. Everything I read tells me that this is too much. I live in London.

Depending on the condition of your existing electrical Installation, which will have to be Inspected and tested before and after renewing your old one. Other factors might be a reason for the price, from the size of your property/ size of the fuse board, etc. I will suggest you have the electrician do a quick assessment of the installation and might possibly end up with a more reasonable offer.

Depending on the size of the house and the size of the fuseboard this sounds very much overpriced , a general domestic fuseboard you will usually pay between the region of 3-400 pounds maximum with materials included . I would seek another quote if I was you

The cost of replacing a consumer unit varies. It all depends on how many circuits there are, if the water and gas bonding require upgrading and what protective devices are being used in the new consumer unit.
Our regulations have changed and now we are required to install consumer units with surge protection in addition to the RCD protection that was required before. This has added additional costs to replacing a consumer unit as you can imagine. I am from Leeds so the prices up here are a little less than down there but here is a breakdown of how I’d price the works to give you an idea

EICR (to be carried out first to highlight any issues) £120
Materials to replace consumer unit £280
Labour to replace consumer unit £160
Upgrading of main gas and water bonding (if required) £150

Obviously these prices are an estimate due to not seeing the property but hopefully this will give you an idea

Regards

Adam

The range for a board change is normally £350 - 600 depending on the number of circuits and the complexity. Without knowing the details it would be hard to judge whether there any other issues involved or factors affecting the pricing.

Fuse board upgrades are very subjective, for example I think my set price for consumer units is fair but I know people that charge upto 50% less than me and then others that are double me. The most important thing to remember is that a consumer unit upgrade is the biggest disturbance to your electrics, apart from a rewire, you shall have. for this reason, we our bound by law, to fully test the property upon completion (this can take almost a full day to do properly). There may also be fault finding needed as the new consumer units are more sensitive than older ones, notifying building control, contacting the DNO to turn up the supply, tail upgrades etc. To be sure you're getting the best price, contact 3 different local electricians and pick the middle quote, also so you know a top market consumer unit, that is up to current regulations, and other materials, will cost no more than £220-£240. Hope this helps.
