Plumbing - blocked drain from bathroom basin

We recently moved into a property and found standing water in the bathroom sink. Pipe draining from sink I'd completely blocked. We've removed u-bend and cleaned in there (secondary problem: the seal on u-bend is a bit knackered now...) but no avail. Have tried to poke around in the waste pipe out of basin but blockage is too far into pipe to reach.
