Can’t find studs. Not sure on type of wall

I want to put a punch bag up but after using a stud finder and a magnet I can only find 1 potential stud and it goes from the middle of the wall to the ceiling (not sure if it’s a wire). After pulling a old wall plug out and looking it seems my wall is about an inch thick, a bit of a space then I’m guessing another inch to the other side. Could my walls be all masonry or all plaster or both and have no studs? Could my walls be like cement then plaster on the front? I think the property was build in the 40’s. Would a bracket and punchbag be safe to hang and if so how would I hang it?

It sounds like you are dealing with a wall that may not have traditional wooden studs. In older constructions like those from the 1940s, it's possible that your walls are made of solid masonry or plaster, or a combination of both, without wooden studs.

If you are unable to locate any wooden studs, you might consider using alternative methods to hang your punch bag safely. Here are some options:

1. **Use Wall Anchors**: If your wall is masonry or plaster, you can use wall anchors designed for these materials. These anchors provide support for heavy objects like a punch bag. Make sure to choose anchors that are suitable for the weight of your punch bag.

2. **Consult a Professional**: If you are uncertain about the structure of your walls and the best way to hang the punch bag, consider consulting a professional handyman or a contractor. They can assess your wall and provide guidance on the safest way to install the punch bag.

3. **Install a Mounting Plate**: You can install a sturdy mounting plate on the wall to distribute the weight of the punch bag evenly. Make sure the mounting plate is securely attached to the wall using appropriate anchors or screws.

4. **Consider Free-Standing Options**: If wall mounting is not feasible or safe, you could explore free-standing punch bag stands that do not require wall attachment. These stands can provide a stable base for your punch bag.

Before proceeding with any hanging method, ensure that it is secure and can support the weight of the punch bag to prevent accidents or damage to your wall.

Given the potential lack of traditional wooden studs in your 1940s-built property, your walls may be solid masonry or plaster. To hang a punch bag securely, use appropriate anchors for masonry or plaster walls such as expanding sleeve anchors or toggle bolts. Ensure the bracket is heavy-duty and distribute the weight across multiple anchor points if possible for added stability.

It's possible that your walls are made of solid masonry or plaster, especially if the property was built in the 1940s. Without studs, hanging heavy items like a punch bag can be challenging. You could use heavy-duty wall anchors designed for masonry walls or plaster walls. These anchors expand behind the wall to provide support. Make sure to choose anchors that are rated for the weight of your punch bag. Alternatively, you could consider mounting a piece of plywood to the wall first and then attaching the punch bag to the plywood for added support. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and consider consulting a professional if you're unsure about the safety of your installation.
