When and how much should I expect to pay a deposit for a bathroom refurbishment? Any advice on what is typical please?

normally 20% then perhaps an additional payment part way through job, it gives contractor confidence, shows commitment from client, and it as to be paid never more than 40% though

Personalty i very rarely take deposits this is because 90% of the time my customers only pay me for labour so i never ask for one i find this also creates a better relationship and trust from the customer . You will find a lot of the bigger companies will ask for deposits and then you will find some of the smaller tradesmen will as well but i would only expect to pay between 10-20% of the total amount personally i wouldn't feel comfortable paying anyone more then that before i saw any work being done.

I do not charge a deposit only the amount needed for materials (adhesive, tubes, grout, hydraulic materials,) the rest of the order you have to make yourself (bath, toilet, washbasin, shower ...) next payment according to progress of work is usually half and the rest on Finish work.

Depends on the agreement you have with you builder and how much trust you have in your builder , if the builder supply all materials it should be a certain percentage for the materials like 20-40 percent for materials and labour accordingly to the progress done usually the best is to have a contract done with all instalments payment agreed so there is no complications in one phrase try to keep it simple ,at the end of the day if the builder keep its promise than it shouldn't be any problems .

The main point is that if you are getting the tradesman to purchase the bathroom suite for you that you cover the deposit or cost of the purchase as and when he or she does that. That way it is covered if you decide to back out of the bathroom refurbishment. Otherwise, if it is a big job which requires several days of work up to a 10% deposit could be taken to cover any cancellation on the customers behalf. This varies from tradesman to tradesman or company to company.

In situation where I design bathroom for my clients and are asked for proposed goods supply then I need to be paid up front for those materials ( bank transfer best option). Therefore depending on total project value reasonable is to arrange payment schedule. Where I trust my client and work schedule is small I will not see a problem to be paid where work is completed. However best option is to be paid weekly where X% of works done X % of price paid.

I would expect for all material costs and approx 50% of labour costs to be settled and applied prior to work commencing (size and duration of project dependant) This ensures no unforeseen delays to occur due to materials not being available during site works and no delay charges being requested.

personally i dont take a deposit i prefer to take money at end of each week that way you get some work done before you part with cash. then order the main fittings your self so you know what your spending your money on.
example if the cost of the work is 4000 hand over 600 per week and the balance on completion hope this helps.

A deposit is paid at the beginning in all cases of business.
The amount is down to the cost of the job, you and the contractor. Money makes the job work, that is why we do it.

Good evening weather they are starting out as new business or an old one who is just looking for part deposit to go towards materials as a rule with anything like that i wouldnt ask for anything more than 15/20% of the complete value of the job. If you feel the need you could offer less say %10 and do payment stages as the work progresses

Deposits can be anyway from 10% to 50% of the total quoted price.
This deposit is normally paid in advance of the work commencing if the installer is supplying the suite and tiles.
Always make sure you get a written or electronic receipt for any money you hand over to the person who will be carrying out the work. NEVER pay to full price of the job, before it has been completed. Always retain a small amount say 15% of the outstanding balance, until you are satisfied with the quality and finish of the job.
Most decent reputable installers will not have a problem with this.
I always take a deposit to cover the cost of materials either a week before commencing or on the first day of the work, then i ask for a labour deposit after one week, and the outstanding to be paid upon customer satisfaction and completion. depending on the size of the job, the milestone payments maybe more frequent.

If you are going to give a deposit no more than 50% towards the cost of materials, with the balance on completion.

Ensure you sign for you and the fitter you have parted with you money which should be in writing for you. This way all the items you are buying belong to you and not the fitter.
