Does circuit board require updating?

I moved to my home 25 years ago and still have the same ancient circuit board. It has 4 blocks with wire round! Do I need to go to my supplier to get it updated?

As per 18th edition 2020 it would give a lot more safety to upgrade the current circuit board to contain both mcb s and rcd,s or rcbo s This can be done by a qualified electrican and your supplier will not do it. However it would be advisable to get a electrical installation condition report which also gives a full check on the existing wiring which may highlight further issues like possible rewiring

Unless you are increasing the load or having an extention done where they have added all new wiring going back to the unit and you need an electrical sign off to get building control approval. Or if you are intending on letting the property out then it needs updating. If none of your circumstances are changing and it's you living in your own home then you do not need to do anything. That's not to say I wouldn't recommend you upgrading your consumer unit for your own benefit and peace of mind.

It depends on how it tests. If it is working safely then technically no.

However… I always strongly recommend upgrade if no RCDs are installed. These do save lives!

Latest regulations state then need for RCDs and Surge Protection in domestic properties.

You need an Electrician to conduct an EICR ( Electrical Installation Condition Report) for the existing electrical installation which will indicate if your current installation is safe or needs to be upgraded.

Yes it now needs replacing to a modern 18th edition regulation one. Your supplier does not replace this as they only supply you with the electricity. You need an electrician to come out and put you one in.

Kind regards
