Broken my tap after changing washer?

I replaced the washer on my bathroom basin tap and the water stopped dripping, but now I have another problem. I turn the tap to turn off the water and it stops fine, but even after the water has stopped the handle keeps going for a little bit more before it eventually stops turning and gets a bit tight. Could I have done something to cause this when changing the washer?

I always change the whole
Tap gland just to be sure everything works and you won’t have to touch it again for 20 years
