Are flat pack shelves strong enough for wall hanging?

We need more storage in our bedroom but all the floor space is being used up. We would like to put a shelf on the wall above our bed but I worry that a store-bought shelf (e.g. ikea or argos) would not be strong enough. I don't want it to fall on my head while we're sleeping! Would you trust an ikea shelf, if installed by a professional, to hold a few kilos of weight?

Hey there!

Flat-pack shelves, like those from IKEA or Argos, can be strong enough for wall hanging if installed correctly and with proper fixings suited to your wall type.

The key factors to consider are:

Wall Type:
Solid brick or concrete walls are ideal for holding weight, while plasterboard walls may require special fixings like toggle bolts or anchors to distribute the load.

Mounting Brackets:
Ensure the shelf comes with sturdy mounting brackets and is securely fastened into the wall studs or appropriate wall fixings.

Weight Capacity:
Check the manufacturer's recommended weight capacity for the shelf and avoid exceeding it. Most flat-pack shelves can hold several kilos of weight when properly installed.

Professional Installation:
Having a professional install the shelf can make a big difference, as they will know how to securely mount the shelf based on your wall type and ensure it holds up over time.

So, in short answer, absolutely yes! A proper fit and decent brackets, accommodated to the type of wall you’re fixing into, fitted professionally will hold indefinitely :)

Best,
Mac
