No you can't, you must only use compression with just chrome pipe.
It is 100% the thermostat within faulty due to age/scale. it can be maintained with a new thermostat that will need to be ordered from aqualisa.
It would be a blocked pipe or filter to tap , either with jointing compound or something has been dragged into the pipework from the storage tank if it was drained completely and no gate valve was available to isolate the tank .
No you can simply change the syphon to a dudley turbo 88 syphon which has an internal overflow allowing the external overflow pipe to be removed completely.
There is a way of servicing these showers , by purchasing a service kit for them , the only problem is , if the thermostat is scaled up , removing the scale with vinegar/scale remover or similar then this may not solve the problem as the thermostat itself may now be at fault from the long term effects of the scale . best option: replace thermostat if thermostatic if not , replace valve itself
