What to use to seal naturally distressed painted floorboards?

We have a floorboards which were originally painted with white paint which has distressed in places over time and we'd like to preserve the distressed look it now has. What kind of sealer/ top coat would be best to use? We don't want to sand down the current floor as we want to keep the remaining paint in tact.
