Tiling a rooftop patio
Good day. I have a rooftop patio off of my kitchen on my third floor apartment. I recently removed the old decking to find the roof (normal flat, black, felt? roofing) is in fine shape--thankfully. Now, I'd like to install exterior ceramic/porcelain tiles. Can I put adhesive right on the roofing, or do I need a cement substrate first? The slope is already well structured towards the drain and so I'd like to avoid using self-leveler/skreed if possible? Thanks in advance for any guidance.
Absolutely make a concrete base, or where it is not possible to make a raised floor
I would suggest finding out what is underneath the felt. If it’s concrete great tile straight onto this maybe put a liquid dpm first for peace of mind but providing tiling is fitted and sealed correctly no problems.
If wood is underneath a water proof board ideally quite thick and strong like osb board could be fixed the the floor and tiled over this again making sure it’s fitted and sealed correctly with the right adhesives and grout for outside use.
I would batten the roof top out then use a nice thick cement board and then tile onto this or you could use a pedal stool system.you can find plenty of these ideas on google.try rhino pedal stools
Remove black felt from roof.
Prime timber
install Duralbase matting onto existing timber floor using a flexible adhesive.
Tile on to Dural base with flexible adhesive.
