Smell from ensuite shower drain.

New build property. > We moved in in October and have had sewage smell in our ensuite ever since. I suspect the waste from the toilet is backing up into the shower waste as they are within 20cm of each other and the toilet is the first on the pipe run. > they have connected the sink/bath/shower in line and then to the toilet soil pipe inside the house . > I have put air intake valves on the bath and sink waste trying to stop the vacuum from the toilet waste emptying the traps . > > I wonder if you could confirm that the builders were correct to connect everything together inside the property? And if this is inline with building regulations. > > The plumber the builder uses is not someone I have much confidence in having had our new house flooded twice since we moved in because of his poor workmanship so if I can I would prefer to sort the matter independently if possible. > > My understanding is that the only way to resolve the issue properly is to separate the bath/sink/shower waste from the toilet and run it through the external wall separately. > > Your advice would be greatly appreciated as the smell is driving us mad.

The toilet waste should exit the house independently, and the sink bath and shower can all be connected to the same waste pipe externally via a soil waste pipe connection on the external of the house.

It's concerning that you've been experiencing sewage smells in your ensuite since moving into your new build property. Connecting all fixtures to the toilet soil pipe inside the house is not uncommon, but proper ventilation and trap sealing are crucial to prevent odors. While separating the bath/sink/shower waste from the toilet could potentially resolve the issue, it's essential to ensure compliance with local building regulations and consult a qualified plumber or building inspector for advice. Given your lack of confidence in the builder's plumber, seeking an independent assessment may be wise to address the problem effectively and permanently.

You may be better with the shower etc connections further away from the toilet waste as the amount of water running through it when the toilets flushed may pull water from your shower trap, another thing to check is if your 4" drainage pipe has a durgo on it at the highest point, a birdcage or a tile vent. because a property has to have a certain percentage of drainage pipes go to atmosphere to stop this problem
