History:
I began my journey in the electrical industry back in 2009 when I started my apprenticeship. After completing my training and gaining valuable experience, I continued to work within the industry, honing my skills across various sectors.
In March of this year, I decided to take the leap and establish my own business, Gerrard’s Electrical Solutions. With over a decade of hands-on experience, I’m committed to providing reliable, high-quality electrical services to homeowners in the North West and North Wales.

The issue is occurring because the brown cable is being used as a constant feed. under safe isolation, remove the switch faceplate and locate the cable going to the light. this can be done by creating a short at the light and testing continuity between conductors. once the cable is identified reconfigure the switch so that the brown conductor is on l1 and the grey conductor is connected to the circuits incoming neutral (using a wago). the grey conductor requires blue sleeving to identify it as a neutral conductor.
the remaining black conductor can be placed in a wago. it can be helpful to label it as an unused core.
then at the light ensure that the grey goes to neutral and brown to live and wago the black. ensure all sleeving to identify conductors is present.
this is a very basic electrical knowledge question and as such this does highlight lack of competency in dealing with the task. we have to advise that only individuals who are competent in understanding the risks associated with electric shock and fire carry out electrical work per the regulations. we therefore suggest that you hire a suitably qualified electrical and do not advise that you carry out this work yourself.
Your supplier isn’t responsible for updating the electrical equipment in your home. the supply side of the installation (everything before your circuit board, like the kwh meter) is owned by your local distribution network operator (dno). you are responsible for ensuring that the electrical system from the main switch of your circuit board is maintained safely by a suitably competent person.
if your board is 25 years old, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unsafe. however, modern technology offers significant improvements in safety, such as dedicated rcbo boards with surge protection.
rcbos (residual current circuit breaker with overcurrent) protect circuits from overload and short circuits while also acting as a localized rcd (residual current device), providing additional protection for each circuit individually.
although having an older circuit board doesn’t imply that your system is unsafe, it is recommended to update the board to meet current standards, improving safety and functionality.

It is possible but electrical work should only be carried out by an individual who is competent in understanding the risks associated with electric shock and fire.
heaters are commonly wired into switch fused spurs by electricians. the job requires some skill to provide an aesthetically pleasing outcome as you have to chase out the wall to provide a flush result.
if your are located within the cheshire area, we would be happy to provide you a free quote to hardwire a heater of your choosing.
Hello,
first of all, please accept our condolences in what is no doubt a difficult time.
an electrician can carry out an electrical installation condition report (eicr) to assess the safety of the electrical system. while the installation may pass, it is likely to receive a c3 advisory code, indicating that it doesn’t meet current standards and that an update is recommended.
however, it’s worth considering whether this approach is the best financial decision. buyers may use the outdated electrics as leverage to negotiate a lower sale price, especially if the eicr includes recommendations for updating.
you may find it more beneficial to update the electrical installation before the sale, as the electrician is legally required to certify the safety of the new installation upon completion. this would avoid paying for an eicr (often over £150 depending on the property size and location) only to later decide to upgrade the system, or risk losing value in the sale price due to outdated electrics.

This questions requires legal advice rather than technical advise from an electrician.
it’s difficult to advise you as i am not legally trained.
i can however advise that it may have been better to arrange an alternative time with the electrician. there are many factors often out of our control (traffic being potentially one of them) when it comes to arriving on time.
as electricians we often get let down by potential clients who don’t pay or cancel last minute. this is why many companies are now enforcing a call out fee on cancellation.
calling you 15times is however harassment as is not acceptable.
