different sized tiles
Around the bath, is a part tiled wall. The tiles are width 25cm x length 40cm and they have a border thin tile at the top, width 5cm. I want to tile above them but fallen in love with a tile 60cm length. Do I have to use the same 40cm length as existing tiles? Will it look awful to use a different size tile?

Don't think the tiles would look right but it would be completely up to yourself we would make it work if you really fallen in love with tiles would recommend taking all old tiles off and starting fresh with the tiles you fallen in love with would be a much nicer finish not so miss match

With a border, even a thin one, two separate tile sizes can work, but there are still things to watch out for. This depends on how many Tiles there are of the 25x40 type. For example, if there were 3 in a row, then you could safely use 2 60cm tiles on the top without it looking out of place.
In less ideal situations, it would make more sense to cut some off of the edge of the sidemost tiles, to keep an even and clean appearance for the centre, the part of the wall you would be looking at the most.

It all depends really, are they a completely different tile? Will they be a different colour/style? If the cost of the new tiles isn't too high then maybe buy a pack or order some samples if possible to hold above the existing, or have someone else hold them above so you can stand back and view yourself... see if there are Google images that you can find.
Ultimately its your bathroom, people will always question why someone has done something in their home with regards to styling ideas or layouts, but at the end of the day, it's an extension of you and what you like, if anyone asked why have you done that, you say because it's your home and you wanted to.... case closed!

You can use what ever tile you like we'd use a tile cutter to cut the tile and then lay them

Match the tiles if you have different sized tiles on top the grout joints will not match and it won’t be the best result.

Yes it will look dreadful. Go to the expense of removing old tiles and fit new tiles all round. Tiles or bathroom refurbs should need to last around 15 yrs before changing and as an added bonus if you tile half way up a wall where you can then the top half of a wall can be painted different colours throughout the years to achieve a different look.

I would recommend using the same sized tiles as per the bottom half of the wall for aesthetics.

I would not recommend using different size tiles to existing tiles on the wall.
With my experience this does not look good. You want wall the tiles all the same size to fit in with you preferred style of tile lay.

Start the first border tile on a joint as close to the middle of the wall as possible. Every 3rd joint will line up thereafter both ways as 3 x 40 cm and 2 x 60 cm =120cm. This will look like it ^was meant to be"

No, you could stagger the larger 60cm tiles so the grout lines do not match on purpose. I always find it easy to "dry lay" tiles on the floor first to see what it would look like before installing.
