Levelling tiled bathroom wall ready for vinyl paper

Hi - I want to vinyl paper my bathroom wall on top of the ceramic tiles. The tiles have big dips between the tiles (where the grout is the level is low). How would i best 'fill' the gaps in to have a smooth surface? Thanks so much

I wouldn't do work like this I'm afraid. I would insist on removing all of the tiles and adhesive and grout. Smoothing the surface before sealing it prior to laying the vinyl paper

To be honest I’d board straight over the tiles to get you a flat surface then apply vinyl on top of that.

To create a smooth surface for vinyl paper on top of ceramic tiles with gaps, follow these steps:

Clean the tiles: Thoroughly clean the ceramic tiles to remove any dirt, grease, or grime. Use a tile cleaner and a scrub brush to ensure the surface is clean and dry.

Fill the gaps: To level out the surface, you can use a premixed thin-set mortar or a self-leveling compound. Apply the compound into the gaps between the tiles, making sure to fill them completely and create a smooth, even surface. Use a trowel or putty knife to spread and smooth the compound.

Sanding: Once the compound is dry, sand it down to ensure a completely smooth and level surface. Use fine-grit sandpaper for this step.

Prime the surface: Apply a good quality primer to the entire tiled surface. This helps the vinyl paper adhere better and ensures a lasting bond.

Apply the vinyl paper: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the vinyl paper to the primed and smoothed surface.

By following these steps, you should be able to create a smooth and even surface on top of your ceramic tiles for applying vinyl paper in your bathroom. Make sure to use the right materials and take your time to achieve the best results.

Personally I’d advise to take the old tiles away.. and prep the surface accordingly for any further works.

Best solution would be to remove the tiles and plaster sub surface. If however the walls ie plasterboard was damaged this would have to be replaced. Not a difficult task if the plasterboard had to be fixed to stud work or dot and dabbed onto concrete or brick wall. This method would also obviously save space in the room

The answer is you’d need to remove tiles or depending on substrate unison’s the tiles and a plaster will be able to skim over the top! Grout can not be patched in as grout will not bond to existing grout

You would have to use some form of adhesive compatible for that application to skimm over the grout lines
Or fully remove yhe tiles so the application can be installed on a flat and even surface.
