Should I have my windows fitted before my house is repointed?

Hi, I've been told two different things regarding this, my window installer has said to get the windows and door in first before I have my house repointed and the roofer/repointer said I should have the repointing done first. I was wondering which one should be done first.

In my opinion I would have the repointing done first due to the dirt and dust from griding out

You should have the windows fitted first. This will allow a better finish up to the Windows. Same as if you were decorating internally as well.

Dear sir/madam

Dear sir, or madam
Ideally it would be beneficial to replace the windows first.
Pointing, and making good around the windows can be done along with entire repointing.

Kind regards
Chris

I’d suggest having the windows done first most of the time we’ve removed windows or doors the render never stays and always cracks or falls off somewhere we do of course re point it but if you’ve just paid for your rendering to be done I’d suggest after installation

I’ve personally done pointing for one of my customers and from my experience I’d have the pointing done first. The amount of mess dust, scratches debris this generates plus mortar marks I wouldn’t want to install new windows that are expensive to get damaged.

I would suggest installing windows and doors first then taping them BEFORE repointing as you will almost certainly need to repoint gaps around the windows

probly better to have windows done first as during the process off the having the new windows installed there may be some brickwork and or pointing that will need making good especially with old windows where the outside horns on the window seal return into the brickwork I could give a better answer if I could see the windows in question

Both the window installer and the repointing expert have valid points, but ultimately, the correct order depends on the specific circumstances of your project.

If your windows and doors are being replaced with new ones that are different in size or shape from the old ones, it may be better to install them first. This is because the openings for the new windows and doors may need to be adjusted based on the dimensions of the new fixtures. After the installation, the repointing can be done around the windows and doors.

On the other hand, if the repointing involves significant work on the exterior walls, it may be better to have it done first. This is because the repointing process can generate dust and debris, which can damage or dirty the new windows and doors. Additionally, if the repointing involves removing and replacing bricks or masonry, there may be a risk of damaging the new windows and doors if they are already installed.

Therefore, it is best to consult with both your window installer and repointing expert to evaluate the specific situation and decide on the appropriate order of work. Additionally, it may be helpful to consult with a general contractor or project manager who can oversee the entire project and ensure that the work is coordinated in the most efficient and effective way possible

Yes vibration caused when drilling could shake loose any fresh pointing.

I would probably go with repointing first, makes it easier for roofer/repointer as don't need to worry about working around new windows. Windows replacement will not be affected by new pointing.

I would recommend having your pointing done first. This way any cement that is dropped will be on your old windows. If you had windows and doors replaced then, pointing done after this, cement would get all over your new frames and door.

When the remedial work on the small bay is required, it would make sense to leave the pointing until after.
However if no brickwork remedies are needed, you can do it before ( about a month before) to give the pointing work enough time and not to be disturbed by breaking out and fixing in of windows.

Hello.
If its repointing ( not rendering ) you should get it done first and then windows, otherwise roofer will either have hard time keeping windows tidy or make real mess of them.
Hope it helps.
Kind regards, Janis

Windows should be fitted before house is repointed in case any render or pointing is damaged when the old windows are removed.
