Hi, I'm repainting the bedroom to freshen up but before I do that I need to fix the cracks and hairlines caused by seasonal change movement, and I'm a novice in this area. So forgive me if it sounded stupid. I have looked up various solutions to cover the cracks, such as crown moulding, caulking etc. For caulking, which material do I use for the wall - acrylic or silicone? -any recommendations for which product/brand is best for this problem? Also, should fibreglass mesh be used for the cracks??
Maybe you have been demolition something in the house , or the tape at the joints has not been place correctly
Use only and only painters caulk. Do NoT silicone it because you can’t paint silicone
Best solution for cracks would be to rake them out to give them some depth and open them up slightly, then you want to put your tape on.. be it crack tape, skrim tape, fibreglass tape etc.. apply your filler on top, thin first coat then bring it out wider on the second coat giving a better blend when sanded and painted. If you were going to go down the caulking route do not use silicone, this will make a barrier for your paint and your paint will not stick to it.
You can use easiefill40. This allows you roughly 30 minutes before it starts to set allowing time for you to make sur the cracks are properly sealed.
Although, the cracks appear small you have to rake them out. This will potentially make the larger so best to use a filler you have to make up and have time to play with.
This product will cost from £13-£20
Try using a drywall joint compound or a flexible polyfilla. I'd personally suggest trying the latter first though as this will more than likely solve your issue.
yes, fiberglass mesh is the best
Crack are easy enough to repair with scrim and filler
Chop out cracks back to brick/block work. Apply Eml then bond over then plasterer. This will stop surface cracks coming back when movement occurs
The best remedy would be to plasterboard tape (scrim tape) over the cracks and reskim and feather it in.
Two ways to sort this problem use a Stanley knife make the crack wider and fill with filler or skim the whole wall if cracks start to show again
Hi do not use silacone to fill cracks because wen it comes to paint over the paint won’t cover so just filler or cork
I always use a Stanley knife and score out the cracks to open them up a bit more in v sort of shape as small cracks the filler can’t tend to cling to anything, then give them a coat of easy fill, overfilling the area, then once dry sand back to flush and once painted it will be lovely, stay away from using caulk so fill wall cracks as it can’t be sanded to a nice finish and silicone products can’t be overpainted
Filler/ caulk should so the trick but it won’t fully fix the problem. If it’s cracked before it will crack again. Don’t use silicone as you don’t be able to paint over it. Decorators caulk
You can apply mesh tape then skim over
British gypsum do a powered filler called Easyfill
Painter's use it to prep a room before painting
Make the cracks deeper using a scraper line the cracks with fibre mesh and apply a couple of coats of filler once dry sand and paint
