Hello ☺️ We recently had a huge tree removed from the garden following severe storm damage. The tree surgeons have left a large stump - about three feet high and I?ve had an idea to make it into a kind of planter. I want to hollow out an area about the size of a kitchen basin and then drill a few holes through the bark for drainage. Then I plan to fill it with trailing plants in the summer like petunias etc. I have lots of ideas, but very little know-how. Does anyone know the best way to do the hollowing our part of the task? Many thanks in advance for your advice. I have green fingers but am a bit out my depth with this one! 😉🙃
You cant it will rot if its that big a stump its old tree that means it will rot and get wood worm etc
Best left to a professional who could hollow the stump out with a chainsaw.
Get a hole cutter to cut out the middle
You can buy a circular saw type drill piece in various diameters which can be attached to power drills and I would use one of these to make various circular cuts into the stump.
I would draw a circle inside the stump to the size you want and then drill around that line first.
Once that is done, start drilling out the inside of the border overlapping the holes you have until you have drilled out what you need. This is more likely to take a couple of days rather than all in one go.
Hope this helps
