OK to paint artex with gloss?

Is it ok to paint over artex with Gloss instead of emulsion?

You can use any paint to paint over gloss but it's important to use a super grip primer if you are painting over gloss with emulsion. If you are painting woodwork like skirting boards, doors or doorframes we recommend using satin or eggshell paint.

Gloss shouldn't be used in any ceilings. Only on woodwork or walls with dado rail in high traffic areas (even on walls it should be an hardwearing eggshell).

If you do use gloss on artex it will need to be undercoated with appropriate primer first.

To paint over gloss with emulsion paint, you will have to use a super grip primer to prepare the surface. If you are painting over a glossy surface with another coat of gloss, satin or eggshell paint, you can lightly sand and clean the surface and paint it without having to use a primer.

Yes. I would recommend first coating with Johnstones Primer Undercoat followed by Johnstones Aqua Gloss. A long pile roller will help you get into all the crevices in the artex.

The short answer is YES , you can paint over Artex ceilings .However there are a five things you need to keep in mind . First you need to make sure the surface is clean and free of any dust or debris. You should also prime the surface before painting. This will help the paint stick to artex and ensure a smooth finish. Finally make sure you use high-quality paint that is designed for ceiling

I wouldn't recommend using gloss. There are some great finishes on the market now. Farrow and ball modern emulsion has a slight sheen. Have you thought of skimming over artex for a flat finish. this would lift the ceiling and give the effect of more light.

Painting over artex with gloss paint is technically possible, but it may not be the best choice for several reasons:

Texture Retention: Artex has a textured surface, and using gloss paint will not only highlight that texture but may also make it more difficult to clean the painted surface because gloss paint can show imperfections more prominently.

Aesthetic Considerations: Gloss paint is typically used on woodwork, trim, and other surfaces that benefit from a high-gloss, shiny finish. Painting textured walls with gloss can create an unusual and unattractive appearance.

Difficulties in Application: Applying gloss paint to a textured surface like artex can be challenging. The texture may make it harder to achieve a smooth and even finish, and it may require more coats of paint to cover the texture adequately.

Cleanability: Gloss paint is not as forgiving when it comes to cleaning. It tends to show marks and scuffs more readily than matte or satin finishes. If you plan to clean the painted surface frequently, a gloss finish might not be practical.

If you want to paint over artex, it's generally recommended to use a good-quality emulsion or latex paint with a lower sheen level, such as matte or satin. These finishes are more forgiving on textured surfaces and can help mask the texture while providing a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Here's how to proceed:

Prepare the Surface: Clean the artex surface to remove any dust, dirt, or contaminants. If the artex has never been painted before, it may have a layer of residue that should be removed.

Primer: Apply a coat of primer to the artex. Use a primer suitable for your chosen paint type (e.g., water-based primer for water-based paint). Primer helps create a good base for paint adhesion and can improve coverage.

Paint: Apply your chosen emulsion or latex paint with a roller or brush. Start with a smaller area to ensure you are satisfied with the finish before proceeding to the entire surface. Multiple coats may be needed for complete coverage.

Finish: Allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats and after the final coat. Follow the manufacturer's recommended drying times.

By using an appropriate emulsion or latex paint with a lower sheen level, you can achieve a more visually pleasing result when painting over artex. If you're unsure about the finish to choose or have specific aesthetic preferences, you can test a small area before committing to painting the entire surface to see how the paint interacts with the artex texture.

It's generally not recommended to paint over artex with gloss paint. Artex is a textured surface commonly used on ceilings and walls, and it's typically painted with emulsion or water-based paints due to its porous nature and the need for flexibility to accommodate the texture.

Using gloss paint on artex can result in several issues:

1. Poor Adhesion: Gloss paint may not adhere well to the textured surface of artex, leading to peeling or flaking over time.

2. Uneven Finish: Gloss paint tends to highlight imperfections, and the textured surface of artex may result in an uneven or blotchy finish.

3. Difficulty in Application: Gloss paint is thicker and more viscous than emulsion, making it challenging to apply evenly to a textured surface like artex.

4. Limited Durability: Gloss paint may not provide the durability and flexibility needed to withstand the movement and settling of the textured surface over time.

For best results, it's recommended to use a high-quality emulsion paint specifically formulated for textured surfaces when painting over artex. These paints are designed to adhere well to textured surfaces, provide even coverage, and allow for the flexibility needed to accommodate the texture without cracking or peeling.

If you're set on using gloss paint for a specific aesthetic or design preference, it's essential to properly prepare the artex surface by cleaning it thoroughly and applying a suitable primer designed to promote adhesion. However, even with proper preparation, using gloss paint on artex may still not yield optimal results compared to using emulsion paint.

Do not paint gloss over artex as it will not bind properly to the surface and will quickly determinate, and crack.
