Garage fit out

Looking to put osb chip board on my walls in the garage for my gym. The walls have been rendered. Can I just use self tapp in screws or do you think I need a DPM first? Or do you think i should barten it out ?

Hiya I think it would be best to screw baton on to the wall but I would cut and pin some dpc to the back of the batons to stop any dampness getting on to the timber from the wall and leaving about 50mm of the floor

Before attaching OSB chipboard to rendered walls in your garage for a gym, it's advisable to use battens for a secure and even surface. This helps with insulation and prevents moisture issues. Consider a damp-proof membrane (DPM) for added protection against moisture. Using self-tapping screws in conjunction with battens and DPM is a thorough approach for a durable gym wall installation.

Would be good to batten out then you could insulate it or if your looking to save money you could just screw straight on to the brick work

I would batten it out and then you have a breather between the wall and new OSB

1. **Moisture Barrier (DPM)**: Since your walls have been rendered, there may be moisture present that could potentially affect the OSB chipboard. Using a damp proof membrane (DPM) between the rendered walls and the OSB chipboard can help prevent moisture from penetrating the chipboard and causing issues like warping or mold growth. If there's any doubt about moisture levels, it's a good idea to err on the side of caution and use a DPM.

2. **Fixings**: Self-tapping screws can be used to attach the OSB chipboard to the walls, but the choice of fixings may also depend on the thickness and condition of the rendered walls. If the walls are particularly hard or uneven, you may need more substantial fixings such as wall plugs or anchor bolts to securely fasten the chipboard.

3. **Battening**: Battening out the walls involves installing timber studs onto the walls and then attaching the OSB chipboard to the studs. This method provides a more secure and stable surface for mounting the chipboard, especially if the rendered walls are uneven or have irregularities

I would ensure that there is no damp coming through the existing walls. If there isn’t I’d batten off the walls ensuring it’s plumb and flat for the osb to be screwed to.

If the walls have been rendered, using a DPM (damp proof membrane) would be advisable to prevent moisture issues. Bartening it out (installing battens) can also provide a more stable surface for fixing the OSB chipboard. Using self-tapping screws is suitable, but ensure they are long enough to securely fasten the OSB to the walls. Overall, incorporating a DPM and battening would enhance the durability and stability of your gym walls.

I would batten internal walls with inuslation inbetween the battern, then fit your chip board.
BE SURE TO FIT YOUR DPM UNDER THE BATTERN/FLOOR.

Batten it out and use insulation 25mm should do. You should dpm after this then plasterboard remembering to install patrasses (sheets of ply) in places where you know you are going to fix to the wall. Hope this helps
