artex is another good idea as steam doesn't get through it so will last years. just doesnt look as nice as flat ceilings.

No. it doesn't matter as they do the same job of flow and diversion. the thing to check is the hot and cold feeds are the same on your wall as the unit. they can be switched around, but this is a bigger job.
