if you have a flat wooden door without glass then roller for ease and for even coverage.

If your asked for the woodwork in the room to be painted as well as the walls and ceiling it should be included in the price
Have you tried stain blocking the imperfections.
Only if you are painting with a diffrent style of paint like silk on emulsion ect.
sometimes a light sanding is good to key for the next color.
