Why are newly plastered walls are very fragile?

We recently had our new apartment professionally plastered and painted. We were originally very happy with the job, but now we noticed that the plaster seems very fragile. With just a slight accidental knock or tap it dents, and we now have countless small holes and scratches in our plaster. Is this normal? I was expecting the plaster to be harder and not so easily damaged
