Renovating a room advice

Hi all So I'm renovating a bedroom. It needs the walls stripped and plastered. The ceiling plastered. The door frames and skirting boards stripped and painted as they are a yellow colour now and the walls painted. Then a new carpet Obviously I'll be getting everything plastered first. Would it make sense to get the skirting boards sanded before everything? I'd like to limit the amount of trades. Is it possible to get someone to sand the skirting boards and then paint them at the same time? At what part in process should I get the new door? The doors are old and they may have to cut new stuff into door frames and then I'll be left with holes to fill Sorry for obvious question Im really new to all this stuff

If there was a trade that was a skirting sander I’d be a millionaire! A painter and decorator will always prep and paint as part of the process! I would get the new door once all the plastering in the room is completed! When you say cut new stuff I assume you mean new furniture hinges in the frame etc. depending on the new door and new hinges etc it may be able to fit in the same place: however if not you have two options get a new frame aswell: or as a painter and decorator you would be able to fill old gaps with wood filler and undercoat/gloss over but it depends on the finish you want

Normally with a job like that we would recommend just removing and replacing the skirting board and door frames, especially if the doors are old it makes it easier to have a fresh surface to work with In terms of installing a new door, in terms of the Skirting board it is advised to remove the skirting board to replaster as the plaster will be behind the current skirting boards. Hope that helps.

if you are having walls re-plastered do not prepare skirting first, as there will inevitably be some small spillage from plastering, and you will end up doing prep work twice. With regard fitting of new door there is no hard and fast rule on when to fit although i would advise one of the last jobs. If old door frames are in bad repair, to replace with new frames is not to difficult or expensive. Most reasonable tradesmen should be capable of painting skirtings for you as well as other work. Hope this helps.

I would re hang the new doors on existing hinge cut outs, so you do not have to fill the frame Remove skirting to plaster wall & sand & refit once the walls are painted that leaves you to cork & paint skirting after.

In relation to the skirting boards and sanding them. My advice is any decent decorator will be able to sand the skirting first and then paint the skirting, it’ll maybe be two days work, one to send and then obviously one to paint but it could even be one days work.
and any decent plasterer will be able to plaster the walls, without getting any plaster on the skirting.

In regards to the doors, I’d get new doors after you get the carpet,
Because if you get the doors first, and then you add the carpet… you will probably have to trim the doors down by the thickness of the carpet in order to stop them from catching on the carpet;
Either that, or you can get the joiners to fit the doors first, and allow for the thickness of your chosen carpet

Thanks

I would definitely recommend getting all the wallpaper stripped first, secondly i would recommend get the full room plastered get all the really messy stuff out the way first as chances are there will be bits off plaster to sand off the skirting boards ect.. so after the plastering is completed i would them recommend getting your new door fitted and whatever else you need fitting with the door, as then at that point you are just left with the decorating side off the job which would mean your decorator can come in and do all the sanded and prep work that's needed on the woodwork and walls without worrying that another trade is going to come in and potentially get mess on the work he's already sanded down and prepped ready for paint then finally the new carpet can go down knowing that's the last thing to do and there's nothing left to be done on the job that can potentially stain/ruin your new carpet.

The door casing ideally need to be in before plastering for a reference to either board or skim up to. If the casing is in then there’s no reason why the door can’t be fitted.
In a perfect world the skirts and arcs need to be installed after the plaster has been applied and the only reason the can’t be sanded and pained before install is because they will have holes in from nails and scuffs etc so will need touching up again. So really it’s up to you what way round you do it but when they are installed there will be work to do on them anyway.

I would advise just replacing the skirting on the whole and painting it at the same time as painting the room, same with the door architrave. You should be able to re use to existing hinge placement on the door frame
