Bubbling and flaking paint on the gable end of your house can be a sign of underlying issues. Here's how to tackle it:

Inspect the Surface: First, assess the extent of the damage. Determine if there is any moisture or rotting wood underneath the paint. Look for cracks or holes in the siding.

Remove Loose Paint: Use a scraper or wire brush to remove any loose or flaking paint. Make sure the surface is clean and smooth before proceeding.

Repair Damage: If there's rot or damage to the wood, it's crucial to address this before repainting. Replace or repair any damaged sections of wood. Ensure the area is dry before proceeding.

Sand and Smooth: Sand the entire gable end to create a smooth surface. This will help the new paint adhere properly. You may want to consider using a power sander for larger areas.

Prime: Apply a good-quality exterior primer to the entire gable end. This will create a stable base for the paint and help prevent future issues.

Paint: Use an exterior paint suitable for your climate and siding material. Apply at least two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly between applications. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying times and application methods.

Maintain: Regular maintenance is key to preventing future paint issues. Inspect and touch up your paintwork as needed to address any problems early.

If you're unsure about the extent of the damage or how to proceed, consider consulting a professional painter or contractor. They can provide expert advice and ensure the job is done correctly, which can save you time and money in the long run.

Safety First: Ensure you have the necessary safety gear, such as goggles, gloves, and a dust mask, especially if you suspect lead-based paint.
Assess the Damage: Examine the extent of the bubbling and flaking. If it's widespread, you may need to repaint the entire gable end.
Remove Loose Paint: Use a paint scraper or putty knife to carefully remove loose and flaking paint. Be gentle to avoid damaging the underlying wood.
Sand the Surface: After scraping, sand the entire surface to create a smooth and even base for new paint. Use medium-grit sandpaper and a sanding block.
Clean the Surface: Remove dust and debris from sanding by wiping the surface with a damp cloth or sponge. Allow it to dry completely.
Priming: Apply a quality exterior primer to the entire gable end. This helps the new paint adhere and provides better protection.
Painting: Once the primer is dry, apply your chosen exterior paint. Use a paintbrush or a paint sprayer for even coverage. Apply multiple coats as needed, allowing each coat to dry between applications.
Maintain: Regularly inspect and maintain the painted surface to prevent future issues. Address any new bubbling or flaking promptly

The gable end of a house (or “pine end” ) is often the side wall of a 3 or 4 elevation house (a semi or a detached property.

It is sometimes it is a wall that is forgotten about, especially if it is not in view, or maybe down a side alleyway, or even a wall of YOUR house, which abuts into your neighbours garden, or onto the street.

Gable end walls can be repaired, damp proofed, insulated, painted and wall coated by the experts at NEVER PAINT AGAIN,

This means it requires protection, and this is something that normal masonry paint will not and cannot provide.

Sounds like water is getting behind it , more than likely your gutters need a clean out , if I was to guess I’d say it’s probably around the soil stack or down pipe and then moving across ,

Could though be down to poor product selection

Paint wise , wait till substrate fully dry … not just the surface . Sand off , peel stop , fill , re paint in a pliolite or other oil based product which will be more durable.

Use a profession , we give guarantees on all our works. If it does fail while under guarantee we will rectify. Which normally means contacting the paint manufacturer as it’s the product that has failed. As we use Dulux or crown our paints also come with guarantees meaning as long as you can show correct method of application they are liable.

Hope this helps

It can be caused by a number of factors, from moisture trapped beneath the surface of the paint or by paint being applied over a powdery surface. Unclean surfaces can be another cause, highlighting the importance to sugar soap the walls to remove any dirt, oil, and grease

When you say in the pine end of your house I'm going to assume that it is from the pine that it is flaking. So in my experience you are encountering this due to the timber itself being sodden. More than likely it is starting to rot and degrade and the level of this can only be determined by getting up there and working on it. You do have options, if it's cladding, fascia or soffit then if you wanted you could just replace it with new and then properly paint the new bits to your liking. If it's not possible to remove it then you can work out which bits are rotten through and then get to work on removing them and replacing. It's a case of prodding and poking, cutting and removing, treating the freshly cut surfaces and then replacing it with new like for like pinning and glueing. Filling and sanding the joints. Do this all the way and the ensure all loose paint has been removed from any healthy timber that has been left. Rub it down and then finish it all off by painting with at least 3 coats of paint. Specifically for exterior timber use. Hey presto good as new

You'll need to scrape off all the loose paint first, you'll probably find that more is loose than it appears. Once all the loose paint is off, you can either sand the edges of any remaining paint to smooth them to the level of the wood and create a seamless transition from the remaining paint to the area of removed paint. Or if you have bits of remaining paint in random areas you can apply a very thin layer of wood filler to bring everything to the same level. Then you should give the existing paint that remains a light sanding to 'key' the surface. Apply a layer of primer to the whole surface followed by two top coats and you're done :)

From insufficient prep work to poor conditions, there are a few common reasons why you have paint bubbles on your home's interior or exterior walls.

You Didn't Clean the Walls First.

You Painted Over Wet Paint or Primer.

The Walls Were/Are Damp

You Painted When It Was Too Hot

You Didn't Prime the Walls.

You Used the Wrong Kind of Paint.

If the cause is surface-level—not the result of a crack in the wall and drywall—begin by scraping off the bubbled paint. Sand it down to create a smooth surface for primer, then fill any holes and cracks with a patching compound. Let the compound dry overnight, then sand again gently with fine-grit sand paper. Clean the area after sanding, apply a primer, allow it to dry completely, then repaint.

Prepare the Surface: Scrape off any loose or flaking paint using a paint scraper or wire brush. Sand the surface to create a smooth and even base for the new paint.
Repair Damaged Areas: Fill any gaps, cracks, or holes with a suitable wood filler. Sand the filled areas once they are dry to ensure a seamless finish.
Clean the Surface: Remove any dust, dirt, or debris from the surface. You can use a damp cloth or sponge for this.
Prime the Surface: Apply a suitable wood primer to the entire surface. This helps the paint adhere better and provides additional protection to the wood.
Painting: Once the primer is dry, apply a high-quality exterior paint designed for wood surfaces. Use a brush or a paint sprayer for an even application. Ensure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding drying times and application instructions.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to prolong the life of the paintwork. Check for any signs of damage or wear and address them promptly.
Remember to use exterior-grade paint and materials for durability against weather conditions

Bubbling and flaking paint on the exterior wall of your house, especially on the pine end or gable end, could be due to various reasons such as moisture intrusion, poor adhesion, or underlying issues with the substrate. Here's how you can tackle this issue:

1. **Inspect the Area:** Start by examining the affected area closely to determine the extent of the damage and identify any underlying issues such as moisture damage, rot, or cracks.

2. **Address Moisture Issues:** If moisture is the culprit, you'll need to address the source of the moisture before repainting. This could involve fixing leaks in the roof or gutters, improving ventilation, or repairing damaged flashing.

3. **Remove Loose Paint:** Use a scraper or wire brush to remove any loose or flaking paint from the surface. Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear such as goggles and a mask to protect yourself from dust and debris.

4. **Sand the Surface:** After removing loose paint, lightly sand the surface to smooth out any rough areas and create a better surface for the new paint to adhere to.

5. **Primer:** Apply a suitable primer to the prepared surface. Choose a primer that is specifically designed for exterior use and is compatible with the type of paint you'll be using.

6. **Repaint:** Once the primer is dry, repaint the surface using high-quality exterior paint. Make sure to apply the paint evenly and follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying times and application methods.

7. **Maintain:** After repainting, keep an eye on the area and perform regular maintenance to ensure that the paint remains in good condition and to address any issues that may arise in the future.

If you're unsure about how to tackle the problem or if the damage is extensive, consider consulting with a professional painter or contractor who can assess the situation and recommend the best course of action.

To tackle bubbling and flaking paint on the pine end (gable end) of your house, you'll want to follow these steps:

1. **Prepare the Surface:** Start by scraping away any loose or flaking paint using a paint scraper or putty knife. Sand the area lightly to smooth out any rough patches.

2. **Clean the Surface:** Use a mild detergent and water solution to clean the area thoroughly. Rinse it well and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

3. **Prime the Surface:** Apply a high-quality primer specifically designed for exterior surfaces. This will help seal the wood and create a smooth base for the new paint.

4. **Apply Exterior Paint:** Once the primer is dry, apply exterior paint suitable for wood surfaces. Use a paintbrush or roller to evenly coat the area, making sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying times and application methods.

5. **Apply Multiple Coats if Necessary:** Depending on the condition of the wood and the type of paint you're using, you may need to apply multiple coats for complete coverage and durability.

6. **Maintain Regular Maintenance:** To prevent future issues, make sure to inspect and maintain your exterior paint regularly. Keep an eye out for any signs of bubbling or flaking and address them promptly to avoid further damage.

Bubbling and flaking paint on the exterior wall of your house typically indicate moisture issues or poor adhesion. Here's what you can do to tackle this:

1. **Inspect for Water Damage:** Check for any leaks or water damage that may be causing moisture to penetrate the wall. Repair any damaged areas and ensure proper drainage away from the wall.

2. **Remove Loose Paint:** Use a scraper or wire brush to remove any loose or flaking paint from the surface. This will provide a clean and smooth base for the new paint.

3. **Sand and Clean:** After removing loose paint, sand the surface lightly to smooth out any rough areas. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust, dirt, and debris.

4. **Primer:** Apply a high-quality exterior primer to the entire surface. Primer helps to seal the surface and improve adhesion of the new paint.

5. **Paint:** Once the primer is dry, apply a high-quality exterior paint suitable for your wall surface. It's best to use a paint specifically designed for outdoor use and to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.

6. **Maintain:** Regularly inspect and maintain your exterior walls to prevent future issues. Keep an eye out for any signs of peeling or bubbling paint and address them promptly.

If you're unsure about any step or if the damage seems extensive, consider consulting a professional painter or contractor for further assistance.
