Do I need to update a fusebox?

The fusebox in our house seems pretty old. Does it need to be replaced? What do the regulations say? And finally how much does it typically cost to replace? Thank you!

The regulations did change within recent years/months. I would recommend a free visual inspection by a electrician follow by free quotation and it will give you a idea what's needed...

Hi. Is it causing you problems? From a safety point of view, the newer consumer units are much safer and easier to use if circuits trip out. Without seeing the amount of circuits, it is hard to say cost wise. Generally about 3 to 7 hundred pounds should do it.

You do but at the moment it's a con because they said you had to change to 17 addition which was plastic so everyone change to 17 addition plastic cover board. Now they are saying its now a metal board so everyone has to change to metal. So if yours isn't a 17 addition board them you will have to change it because it is more safer and I tel you why because the old fuse cable wouldnt blow on low voltage instead they will catch on fire but with these new boards it will trip the RCD instantly if there was a problem. Hope this help.

if you are adding circuitsand adding in sockets anywhere in your home or making alterations to the electrics in your bathrooms or kitchen then your fuse board will need upgrading to a split load RCD protected board. If you are not doing any of the above then it is only recommended that you upgrade.
We charge from £300 (depending on size) for a board change and full test including certification and notifying building control.

Hope this helps

fuseboxes dont need replacing if you dont intend on adding any further circuits or additions to the original install. however new consumer units are recommended as rcd are required to cover most circuits in house and old fuseboards dont have this feature plus several other factors to long to go into here on the benefits of upgrading to mcb`s and not fuses which tended to take longer to overload and break. average prices range from £200 to £700 depending on amount of circuits on installation

You may be surprised to know that the regulations do not say that you must change your Fuseboard, providing that your Fuseboard complied with the regulations at the time that it was installed. However, the regulations recommend that you upgrade to ensure you are as safe as possible but this is your choice. I would usually suggest installing a 17th edition complaint Fuseboard (especially where no RCD protection is present).

The cost would usually depend on the size of your existing Fuseboard (ie number of circuits), and the price might increase if the Fuseboard has any access restrictions. You should expect to pay between £300-£400. You can of course find an electrician to do this for you at a lower cost but chances are they will not be registered with a scheme provider which is required for this type of work.

A consumer unit need not be replaced simply because it has rewireable fuses, cartridge fuses or older-type circuit-breakers, as these devices can provide satisfactory overcurrent protection.

Further, a consumer unit need not be replaced because it does not incorporate RCD protection, as there may be ways to provide this protection other than replacing the consumer unit.

Similarly, in light of the changes made in Amendment No 3 of BS 7671: 2008, a consumer unit need not be replaced because its enclosure is made of combustible materials such as, for example, plastic.

There is no legal requirement that calls for an existing installation to be upgraded to current standards.

However there is a requirement under the Building Regulations for England and Wales to leave the installa on and the building no worse in terms of the level of compliance with other applicable parts of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations than before the work was undertaken.

Replacing a consumer unit is an alteration to that installation. Additions and alterations are classed as new work. The work must therefore be designed, erected and verified in accordance with the requirements of the current edition of BS 7671, as amended (Regulation 110.1.2(vi))
and must not impair the safety of the existing installation (Regulation 610.4). On completion of the verification of the work an Electrical Installation Certificate must be issued .

If the fuse box is of wood construction it needs to be replaced with an amendement 3 consumer unit, all consumer units must provide RCD protection and circuits with miniature circuit breakers. Also gas and water supply must be earthed, and exsiting circuits tested and any faults rectified.
